At-Home Cortisol Test with Nutra Nourish

While we often discuss stress as a purely emotional or psychological state, it is, in reality, a deeply biological event that triggers a complex cascade of hormonal responses within your system. At the center of this biological system is cortisol, frequently referred to as the “stress hormone”. Despite its sometimes negative reputation, cortisol is actually essential for life. It plays a critical role in regulating your metabolism, controlling your sleep-wake cycle, and keeping systemic inflammation in check.

At NutraNourish, we use the gold-standard Genova Diagnostics Adrenocortex Stress Profile, which includes the Cortisol Awakening Response (CAR), to map your cortisol levels across the day. The test is collected at home through 4 to 6 saliva samples, and the results are interpreted by Dr. Menka Gupta to give you a clear picture of how your HPA (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal) axis is actually functioning.

Find out exactly what your stress hormones are doing.

Get a complete 24-hour view of your cortisol rhythm and adrenal function backed by functional medicine, interpreted by Dr. Menka Gupta.

What is a Cortisol Test?

A test for cortisol measures the specific amount of this steroid hormone circulating in your system. The cortisol hormone produced by the adrenal glands follows a “diurnal rhythm,” meaning it changes throughout a 24-hour cycle. In a healthy individual, levels should be highest in the morning to help you wake up and lowest at night to allow for deep sleep.

While doctors can check these levels through blood, urine and saliva cortisol testing is widely considered the most effective method for functional health. Unlike a single blood draw, saliva testing is non-invasive and allows for multiple collections throughout the day.

What Causes High or Low Cortisol Levels?

Cortisol levels do not fluctuate at random; they are a direct reflection of your internal and external environment. High cortisol levels are typically driven by the body’s attempt to survive a perceived threat. Common causes include:

Persistently high levels can result in weight gain, muscle weakness, high blood pressure, mood changes, anxiety, insomnia, and impaired immunity.

Conversely, low cortisol levels reflect the body’s reduced ability to mount an adequate stress response.

Persistently low levels can result in chronic fatigue, poor stress tolerance, low blood pressure, dizziness, hypoglycemia, and an increased susceptibility to illness.

Who Should Take a Cortisol Test?

A cortisol level test is highly recommended for anyone who feels their waking and sleeping window has disturbed. If you are experiencing persistent fatigue that isn’t resolved by sleep, you are a prime candidate for this test.

It is also incredibly beneficial for:

  • High-Pressure Working Professionals
  • Caregivers and Parents
  • Athletes
  • Those with Weight Concerns

Nutrient deficiencies tend to accelerate aging and reduce resilience, so testing is especially important for anyone optimising for long-term health rather than just managing symptoms.

If you’re nodding your head “YES” to any of these, this is for YOU.

Stop guessing. Stop relying on multivitamins that may or may not be working. Get the data, get a plan, and start feeling like yourself again.

Which Health Issues Does It Help?

A comprehensive test for cortisol provides a window into the health of your Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis. It isn’t just about whether your cortisol is “high” or “low”; it’s about the timing of the release.

Elevated Diurnal Cortisol

Flattened Curves

Reverse Rhythms

The CAR Factor: The Cortisol Awakening Response (CAR) measures the rise in cortisol within the first 30–45 minutes of waking. This is a unique marker of “stress resilience.”

Benefits of Cortisol Testing

Why Is Cortisol Testing Important?

Many people suffer from “invisible” symptoms: fatigue that coffee cannot fix, weight that will not budge despite exercise, anxiety that peaks at specific times of day, or feeling wired-but-tired at night. They are often told their standard blood work is normal, which leaves them with symptoms but no answers. This is exactly where cortisol testing becomes vital. It looks beyond basic markers to see how your body is actually functioning in real time, across the full 24-hour cycle. A single morning blood test cannot tell you whether your cortisol curve is flat, reversed, or stuck in survival mode. A four-point saliva test can. That distinction is the difference between guessing at supplements and building a targeted recovery plan, and it is often the missing piece for people who have spent years bouncing between specialists with no clear assessment.

Step-by-Step Process

03

Choose a normal, representative day to collect your samples (avoid days of illness, travel, or unusual events)

04

Collect 4 to 6 saliva samples at the specified times, starting immediately upon waking to capture the Cortisol Awakening Response (CAR)

05

Avoid eating, drinking, or brushing your teeth for 30 minutes before each collection to prevent sample contamination

06

Schedule a courier pick-up, we arrange shipping to the laboratory

07

Lab analysis is completed and results are returned within 2 to 3 weeks of receipt

08

Dr. Menka Gupta personally reviews your results and walks you through them in your 1-hour consultation

How Long Does A Cortisol Test Take?

Each saliva sample takes only a few minutes to collect at home, with the full set spread across a single day. Lab results are typically available within 2 to 3 weeks of the sample reaching the laboratory, and you will receive your personalised program from Dr. Menka Gupta following her expert review of your report. Fasting is not required, but you must avoid eating, drinking, or brushing your teeth in the 30 minutes before each sample.

What Will A Cortisol Test Tell Me?

The at-home Cortisol Test gives you a complete, time-stamped view of how your adrenal glands are functioning throughout the day. Specifically, it tells you:

Morning cortisol level:the first measurement after waking, which should be your daily peak and is critical for energy, focus, and getting out of bed easily
Cortisol Awakening Response (CAR):the rise in cortisol within the first 30 to 45 minutes of waking, a unique marker of your stress resilience and a strong predictor of burnout risk
Midday cortisol level:shows whether your hormone is descending appropriately as the day progresses, supporting steady energy without crashes
Afternoon cortisol level:captures the classic 3 PM energy slump and shows how well your body sustains focus into the late afternoon
OEvening and nighttime cortisol level:should be your daily low, allowing melatonin to rise and deep sleep to begin; elevated readings here explain insomnia and wired-but-tired symptoms
Diurnal pattern (the full curve): markersshows whether your cortisol release is healthy, elevated all day, flattened, or reversed, each pattern points to a different underlying issue
DHEA-S levels: capacitythe buffering hormone that balances cortisol, indicates how depleted your adrenal reserves are and how much capacity you have to handle further stress
Cortisol-to-DHEA ratioa key resilience marker that reveals whether your body is still adapting to stress or moving into exhaustion

Together, these results pinpoint not just whether your cortisol is “high” or “low” but how your full HPA axis is behaving across the day. That is the foundation Dr. Menka uses to build your personalised stress recovery, sleep, and hormone balancing plan.

What Our Customers Say

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

A basic test for cortisol might only look at your levels once. An adrenal function test (like our profile) looks at the rhythm of cortisol over 24 hours and often includes DHEA, providing a complete picture of your stress-adaptation system.

While fasting isn’t always strictly required for saliva testing, you must avoid eating, drinking, or brushing your teeth for 30 minutes before each collection to ensure the sample isn’t contaminated.

We never recommend that patients discontinue medically necessary medications or supplements in order to complete testing. Please speak to your health practitioner about it

“Adrenal fatigue” is a popular term, but it is not a recognized medical assessment. Instead, we use the test to assess HPA Axis Dysregulation, which is the scientifically backed term for the symptoms people associate with adrenal exhaustion.

Yes, absolutely. Research consistently shows that people suffering from burnout often have a “flattened” cortisol curve or an abnormal CAR, meaning their body has lost its ability to regulate energy levels effectively.

Yes, shift work affects cortisol test results because cortisol follows your natural sleep-wake cycle. In shift workers, this rhythm is disturbed. To ensure accurate results in shift workers, sample collection times are adjusted based on your actual sleeping and waking hours rather than standard clock times.

Yes, children can take a cortisol test, however its level varies by age, so results should always be interpreted by qualified healthcare professionals.

Yes, glucocorticoid medications such as steroids, inhalers, etc., alter natural cortisol levels and affect the results. It’s always important to inform your healthcare provider before testing.
